The local NHS is working in partnership to make our healthcare system more efficient and ensure that we provide the very best service for patients.

This is part of the NHS's national QIPP (Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention) initiative.

We want to share information about the progress we're making - and the impact our work is having - so this will be the first in a series of regular bulletins.

Getting the right treatment – in the right place

With people across North Merseyside presenting at accident and emergency (A&E) departments when they could get treatment elsewhere, the local NHS is using marketing to help tackle the issue.

Despite continued investment in community-based alternatives, such as walk-in centres and out-of-hours GP provision, demand for hospital services has continued to grow – as has the cost of providing them. Each year an average of £280 is spent per head of population across North Merseyside on acute hospital urgent and emergency care.

Clinicians take central role in technology programme

The NHS in North Merseyside is putting information technology at the heart of improving efficiency and delivering enhanced patient care.

Since the North Mersey QIPP IT programme started in spring 2010, approximately £1 million in savings has been identified – a figure expected to double by the end of 2013 – while at the same time Trusts make huge strides in developing the use of technology in clinical systems.

The programme is led by the North Mersey Health Informatics Service, which provides ICT services to NHS Trusts within the North Mersey area.
